Teeth: (2007)

10/25/2024

Synopsis: A young girl, upon coming of age, realizes she has a special defense against men who would take advantage of her.

The Good: The idea is defiinitely the stuff of nightmares. The slighlty comedic approach walked the line nicely with true horror. It would have been too much if taken seriously. There was actually some nuance, even though it was quickly stomped out time after time. A gross but interesting morality tale.

The Bad: How many dicks can you see bitten off in one film, really? There’s a backstory with the mother that’s just unnecessary and missed an obvious opportunity as well as an overshadowing for the reason behind the mutation that was weak to begin with, then ignored entirely.

Best Line: “Vagina Dentata. The toothed vagina appears in the mythology of many and diverse cultures all over the world. In these myths, the story is always the same. The hero must do battle with the woman, the toothed creature, and break her power. The myth springs from a primitive masculine dread of the mysteries of women and sexual union. Fears of weakness, impotence. It is a nightmare image of the power and horror of female sexuality. The myth imagines sexual intercourse as an epic journey that every man must make back to the womb, the dark crucible that hatched him.”

Fun Fact: During the filming of the first scene, many of the neighbors were protesting the film because they believed it to be a pornographic film.
