Slice: (2018)

Synopsis: The death of a pizza delivery but, leads to an investigation involving ghosts, a werewolf and coworkers.

The Good: You rarely see black-led horror comedies but they’re some of my favorite films. The story is irreverent and weird and it feels like some of the early 90s films that took a lot more risks. Chance the rapper made an interesting werewolf.

The Bad: The script held this back. For a low budget film it had a really cool concept, a solid cast (Zazie Beetz, Chris Parnell) and pretty good production all around but the dialogue and the slightly confusing storyline distract constantly.

Best Line: Did I die?’
‘I think so.’
‘Shit…that sucks!’

Fun Fact: The script started as a pilot for a TV series, which explains why there are so many times when it cuts to black (which is where the commercials would have been inserted), why there are narration segments that seem like the end of episodes, and why there are so many characters and storylines. It seems that the only thing that was changed from the original TV version is the inclusion of a lot of strong language, including many usage of the word “fuck”.
