Sheena: (1985)

10/24/2023

Synopsis: A white girl orphaned and raised by a local African tribe must fulfill a prophecy to protect her people.

The Good: I’ve always liked the jungle girl stories, always will probably. It did stick pretty close to the source material and it didn’t pull punches in ways a lot of films do.

The Bad: White savior in the worst possible way but at least it was also sexist and culturally insensitive. There were a lot of nude scenes and the hero was at once a powerful, mystical heroine…and also a helpless idiot who fell for literally the first white man she’d ever seen.

Best Line: You have fur! The Zambouli men do not have fur on their bodies.’

Fun Fact: Elizabeth of Toro who played the shaman was a Ugandan princess in real life, a Cambridge graduate, the first black woman to appear in Vogue and appointed by Idi Amin as Uganda’s foreign minister.
