Napoleon Dynamite: (2004)

9/14/2022

Synopsis: A listless and alienated teenager decides to help his new friend win the class presidency in their small western high school, while he must deal with his bizarre family life back home.

The Good: It was funny…mostly. This has never been my bag and the humor is not what I’d call my cup of tea but it definitely had its moments. I know there are two very distinct camps here but honestly, it was just…ok.
Some of the humor landed but nothing was like quote-worthy (to me). I did like Lashawnduh. That whole side story was cute and entertaining.

The Bad: I dunno, it’s like…..it kind of felt like taking a tranquilizer. I get why people love it, especially when it came out but it was slow for me. It was the cinematic equivalent of a dad joke. I smirked but that’s it. Extra points for being exceptionally original though.

Best Line: Hey, Napoleon. What did you do last summer again?’
‘I told you! I spent it with my uncle in Alaska hunting wolverines!’
‘Did you shoot any?’
‘Yes, like 50 of ’em! They kept trying to attack my cousins, what the heck would you do in a situation like that?’
‘What kind of gun did you use?’
‘A freakin’ 12-gauge, what do you think?’

Fun Fact: Jon Heder drew all of the drawings in the movie except the unicorn.

Verdict:

Technical: 5.75
