Happy Death Day: (2017)

9/21/2024

Synopsis: A college student relives her birthday, over and over again, getting murdered each time.

The Good: The whole concept is so much fun. It had all the pieces of a great horror movie. The weird, paranormal back story, the clueless sweet lead, the supporting cast of shadowy suspects. It’s a fun whodunnit with a serial killer vibe. The best kind of feel good horror. And Jessica Rothe can actually pull of some really good scenes.

The Bad: They effed it up. It’s not terrible but you can tell there are moments where they just gave up taking anything serious and tried to shoe horn i na bit of comedy that didn’t come off right. I’d still watch it maybe two or three times for fun but it could have been much better. There’s a couple of problematic moments sprinkled throughout that should have been handled better re: homophobia, racism, sexism, the usual suspects.

Best Line: Would you stop looking at me like I just took a dump on your mom’s head?’

Fun Fact: The scene where Tree Gelbman walks through the campus quad naked had to be done quickly, given that it was being filmed on an active college campus, this presented the risk of students witnessing the scene being filmed and/or taking photos. The crew took extreme precautions to clear away any potential onlookers. In the end, they managed to do just 2-3 takes.
