Ghost Story: (1981)

10/5/2023

Synopsis: Two generations of men find themselves haunted by the presence of a spectral woman. When the son of one of the elderly men returns to his hometown after his brother’s mysterious death, they attempt to unravel her story.

The Good: It’s actually a very well told, layered and interesting story with a lot of depth for the time. Thanks, mostly to being based on the Peter Straub novel, I’m sure. The acting was very good and the scenery evocative.

The Bad: I found my attention wandering from time to time. It’s not a fast paced story. It is very interesting but it requires a dedication to watching without distraction to catch all the threads. If you miss something it’s easy to lose the tension at the same time.

Best Line: Eva: I will take you places you’ve never been. I will show you things that you have never seen and I will see the life run out of you.

Fun Fact: Final theatrical feature film of veteran actors Melvyn Douglas, Fred Astaire, and Douglas Fairbanks Jr.
