Final Summer: (2023)

9/22/2023

Synopsis: In the aftermath of a tragedy at a summer camp, a group of camp counselors find themselves fighting for their lives against a masked killer.

The Good: I’m a fan of the old 80s slashers and this pays a lot of respect to those. Some might say low budget cheesy films are what built the genre. The premise, the entire setup was directly out of that mold. I really appreciated the diverse cast, body positivity and lack of objectification even though you tend to expect that in these films.

The Bad: This is low budget filmmaking, right? Ok, so the major issues were with inexperienced actors and some lack of tension during the kills. Wide angles stole a little of the drama here. It’s an indie film that shows room for growth but I’m not mad I saw it.

Best Line: Hey! Fuck off, man. This shit ain’t cool. What the fuck?!?’

Fun Fact: Camp Silverlake is named as a nod to the Nick Castle film, The Last Starfighter (1984). In that film, the main characters camp out at Silver Lake. Nick Castle played “The Shape” in John Carpenter classic slasher film, Halloween (1978)
