Synopsis: The Bandit is hired on to run a tractor-trailer full of beer over state lines, in hot pursuit by a pesky sheriff.
The Good: I just can’t help myself. It’s in the fucking DNA. Few movies have as much of a light humorous feel. The chases are classic b-movie camp. The one-liners are great. That car is something special and Jerry Reed is an under appreciated presence in the these films. Field and Reynolds hold a high stakes battle for who can wear the tightest pants.
The Bad: Let’s be honest, it’s a product of time. Rampant misogyny, chauvinism, etc. Sally Field’s character comes off a little ditzy. Not winning any awards for script, acting or production value. Less prejudice than expected but problematic top to bottom.
Best Line: “What we’re dealing with here… it’s a complete lack of respect for the law.”
Fun Fact: Hal Needham asked Jerry Reed to write a theme song for the film. A couple of hours later, Reed presented “East Bound and Down” to Needham. With an acoustic guitar, Reed started to play it and Needham immediately stopped him. Thinking Needham didn’t like it, Reed offered to re-write the song. To which Needham replied: “If you change one note, I’ll kill you!” The song went on to become one of Reed’s biggest hits.
