Boy Meets Girl: (2014)

10/17/2024

Synopsis: A trans girl in her 20s navigates life and love in a small town.

The Good: I think this was a very sweet movie and I’m so glad it exists. We need more films where trans people are just… alive, dealing with the same shit everyone else does. It has a lot of heart, a very realistic take on the difficulties of trans love (in this specific situation) and a good ending.

The Bad: This is good and bad, what if trans people had Hallmark movies? It’s pretty much that. Along with all the stupid tropes, cliches and oversimplifications. All the characters do really dumb stuff and you’re frustrated for them, constantly. Very predictable ending. Obviously low budget but that doesn’t take much from the story.

Best Line: “God, the high school in this town, who can survive it?”
“Isn’t that the truth? I was fat.”
“I had terrible acne.”
“And I was a boy, so that sucked.”

Fun Fact: “That kid of mine’s been throwin’ me curveballs my whole life, but, luckily, I play baseball.” This is actually a direct quote from Michelle Hendley’s real dad.

Verdict:

Technical: 7.1
