Synopsis: Three punk-loving New York City dudes need a change and drive a VW Beetle to California. After rednecks kill one of them in Arizona, they want justice. A cute girl helps them.
The Good: I cannot believe I’ve never seen this. With genre films like this, the first thing you tend to find is shoddy storytelling or weak plots but Randall Jahnson (the Doors, Mask of Zorro) does a competent job here. Jon Cryer makes a great punk kid, and Lee Ving in anything is a welcome surprise. As usual, the ‘skill acquisition’ scenes are a little compressed for reality but not terrible. This film has heart and a fun vibe.
The Bad: I would have kept Flea for longer. No spoilers but his character was so much fun. I would have preferred keeping him on screen. It’s hard to find much to complain about. It’s not an Oscar winner (most of what I watch isn’t) but it has style and dares to take chances that seem to pay off. It runs longer than expected but this isn’t a really bad thing. More movies would benefit from taking their time.
Best Line: “Look, Milo, we’re talking about real life here, okay? Real life is not California. Real life is a shit sandwich and every day you gotta take another bite.”
Fun Fact: Flea played bass for Lee Ving’s band Fear from 1982 to 1984.
