Laggies: (2014)

Synopsis: After her boyfriend proposes, twenty-something Megan hides out with a sixteen-year-old to get her head together.

The Good: I liked this one. It’s cute, it’s fun and it doesn’t take anything too seriously. It manages to touch on some serious issues, mainly the feeling of being lost in life and wanting to go back to an easier time. I did enjoy the obvious swipe at how everyone in high school movies looks like college students, and they worked hard to make the kids actually look like kids here.

The Bad: I’m not a fan of the end of the script where they’re just casually glossing over a major plot point. Without spoilers it’s just one of those habits these films have where they go ‘We’re gonna ignore the one big thing here. Everyone look over there.’

Best Line: You can’t keep putting aside what you want for some imaginary future. You’ve gotta suck it up and go with your gut.’

Fun Fact: Annika has a pet turtle named Lynn. According to Lynn Shelton on her director’s commentary, this was in the original script and not a reference to her. The turtle’s real name is Shelly, which also happens to be similar to the director’s last name. It was originally a dog before being changed to a turtle for budgetary reasons.’
